We Remember

TERADA, Florence

July 5, 1930 — September 30, 2015

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Florence Matsuye Terada on September 30, 2015 at the age of 85. Florence was born in Vancouver, BC on July 5, 1930 to parents Sutezo and Shizu Kumagai. As a young child her life was dramatically impacted by the forced relocation of her family during WWII. During this time, her family was moved to three different locations including Sandon and Lemon Creek in the Kootenays and Farnham, Quebec, before they were able to re-establish a permanent home in Toronto.

Despite these difficult circumstances, she grew up in a close family united by love, support and friendship. In 1954, Florence met her future husband, Yoshiharu, while he was visiting Toronto to pick up a new car. They were married in 1956 and she moved to live with his family in Kelowna.

A Kelowna resident for almost 60 years, Flo worked tirelessly alongside Yosh to create and maintain a successful apple orchard, where they raised their children. She loved the outdoors and many family outings, fishing and matsutake adventures in her younger years.

Florence was loved and admired by many for her gentle and caring nature. She touched many hearts with her genuine kindness, warmth and compassion. Selfless through and through, Flo always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Her passion and enthusiasm for her grandchildren was truly inspiring.

Although modest in the kitchen, she was famous for her apple pie, dill pickles, preserved peaches and legendary care packages. She also applied her culinary skills as a valued member of the Kelowna Buddhist Temple Women’s Association, where she spent countless hours working and laughing alongside many of her dear friends.

Survived by her loving sons Lorne, Darren (Cathy), her loving granddaughters Jaimeson and Alyssa, daughter Carrie (Dan Sakaki), brothers Hiroshi “Doc” and Yasuyuki (Misa). Predeceased by her loving husband Yosh, sister Toshiko and sister-in-law Helen.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00 pm at the Kelowna Buddhist Temple, 1089 Borden Avenue, Kelowna, BC, with Rev. Yasuhiro Miyakawa officiating.
