We Remember

THIESSEN, Oliver “Jack”

August 24, 1941 — December 7, 2023

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Jack Thiessen, who passed away while surrounded by his loving family on December 7, 2023, at the age of 82.

Jack goes to join those who went before him, including his parents and his sister Sylvia. Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Carmi; their four children, Mitch (Donna), Carla (Clay, decd.), Mark (Lisa), and Angie (Brenda); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He will be forever missed by his remaining sister Delores, and many other extended family and friends who loved him.

Jack was born in Herbert, Saskatchewan, and he moved to BC with his family, settling in Abbotsford. He met his wife Carmi when his best friend Tony, Carmi’s brother, brought Jack home with him from school one day.  A 67-year romance blossomed, and Jack and Carmi married in 1961.  Four kids quickly completed the family.  Jack’s family was the most important thing to him, and he worked harder than most people could.  His many careers included working with his father at a car dealership, installing airplane electronics, farming, and retail sales.  Through all of these years, he built many of the homes his family lived in.

Camping and fishing at Nicola Lake was the cornerstone of family time together.  Our fondest memories are of dad taking the family out on early morning fishing trips, where he would patiently answer the millions of questions we would ask him, and where he would tug on our lines when we weren’t watching to pretend we had one.  Always joined by family and friends, “the Thiessen Clan” could be heard all over the campground.

Dad’s last year of life was challenging as he struggled with his health. While it brings us comfort to know he is free from his suffering, no words can express how much he will be missed and how much he was loved by everyone who knew him.

We’d like to thank all the staff at KGH and Cottonwoods who contributed to his care. We’d also like to especially thank the staff at Hospice House, who took great care to ensure he was comfortable and to help our family navigate through those difficult days.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Central Okanagan Hospice House or the BC Cancer Foundation.

In honour of Jack, a Funeral Mass will be held on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2023, at 10:30 AM (PST), located at ST. CHARLES GARNIER PARISH (3645 Benvoulin Rd.). There will be a reception to follow.
