We Remember

TOEWS, Tena Adina

February 9, 1938 — December 14, 2022

Tena Toews (nee Born) went peacefully to be with her Saviour on December 14, 2022, lovingly surrounded by family.

Tena was born in Rabbit Lake, SK on a farm in the Mennonite community of Glenbush. The family consisted of seven boys and four girls, she being the third youngest child. Often in the evening the table was full of siblings doing homework while her dad, a former teacher in the old country, would assist and check the work. She learned basic bookkeeping from her dad and was always strong in math. Tena talked about driving the tractor during haying time and in general was quite an energetic “tomboy”. Tena became a follower of Jesus at an early age and was baptized shortly thereafter. The family moved to Kelowna when Tena was in her teens. After graduating from high school, she attended Hepburn Bible School before working several years to assist siblings in their education. She then attended Winnipeg Bible College, pursued secretarial training, and later, early childhood education.

Tena met Neil Toews at a Bible camp, and after a year of courtship, they were married on August 22, 1964. Neil and Tena were both involved in education in Prince George, 100 Mile House, Three Hills, and Edmonton. The Lord blessed them with three children: Chad, Gaylene, and Marlin, and seven grandchildren: Tyler, Damiane, Levi, and Nathan Sawatzky; Julia, Jesse, and Dawson Toews. We will all miss her dearly, but rejoice in the fact that she is now in the loving arms of her heavenly Father.

Tena loved children and worked in daycares on Canim Lake Reserve, in 100 Mile House, and at Three Hills. She excelled in one-on-one situations and in assisting special needs children. Tena loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time walking. She always insisted on fairness and would challenge inconsistencies.

Habakkuk 2:4 was an expression of her faith, “The just shall live by faith.” Another favourite verse of hers was Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”
