We Remember

TORRANCE, Paul Douglas

June 24, 1941 — May 13, 2026

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Douglas Torrance, who was born on June 24, 1941, in Galt, Ontario, to Harold and Mildred Torrance.

Paul lived life fully, passionately, and always with a story to tell. Growing up in Galt, he played baseball, was a talented forward in hockey, and developed the quick wit and sense of humour that would become his trademark throughout his life. Whether sharing stories from his younger days or teasing those closest to him, Paul had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease.

Paul is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 53 years, Catherine (Budd) Torrance – his beloved “sweetie pie” with her beautiful ocean blues. Together they built a life rooted in loyalty, adventure, love, and unwavering partnership.

He leaves behind his daughter, Lara “Smood” Torrance Taylor (Gary), and his son, Jody Torrance (Kara), whom he loved deeply and was endlessly proud of. Paul was also a cherished grandfather to Brooke, Kadence, Nate, Konnelly, and Cullen, each of whom brought tremendous joy to his life. And of course, he leaves behind his “boy,” Angus – his loyal Rottweiler companion. Paul is also survived by his loving sister, Sharon Bauer, and his brother, Robert Torrance.

Throughout his life, Paul formed lifelong friendships with men he considered brothers – Al, Merv, Cam, Cal, Ron, Mike, Jody, Rick, Pete, Gerry, Ken, Duncan – along with their wives, whom Paul absolutely loved to tease. His friendships ran deep, lasting decades, built on loyalty, laughter, and countless memories.

Paul had a significant and respected career as a Pattern Engineer, working with Savage Shoes, Genesco, Bauer, and Nike. Family and friends were fortunate beneficiaries of his work, often finding themselves equipped with the latest footwear and the very best Bauer skates. He took pride in his craft and the life it provided for those he loved.

What defined Paul most was his unwavering loyalty and deep love for family and friends. He had a remarkable ability to make every person feel like they were the most important one in the room. And just when you felt it most, he would leave you with the unmistakable ol’ Paul Torrance wink – his quiet way of letting you know exactly how he felt about you.

Paul was known for his contagious laugh, brilliant smile, and wonderful sense of humour. He loved classic cars, oldies music, Gordie Howe, and westerns. He had a natural warmth about him and always tried to put others at ease, brighten a room, or elevate the laughter in any gathering.

To know Paul was to appreciate the call of the loon, the northern air, the fresh lakes of northern Ontario, and the beauty of BC. Over the years, he spent endless hours in “God’s Country” north of Parry Sound, where he shared countless teachable moments of the lake, fishing, and wildlife with those fortunate enough to be beside him. Those memories remain treasured gifts.

Paul was also a restless soul forever seeking adventure. He and his family moved throughout Ontario, eventually heading west to Portland, before finally settling in British Columbia, where he remained until his final days. Though he appreciated life’s simple pleasures, he was profoundly grateful for the people he held close.

We would like to think Paul is now reunited with the loved ones who have been waiting for him – standing tall, showcasing that brilliant smile, and reassuring us all that he is okay.

A touching line, uttered by Gus as he lay dying in Paul’s beloved series Lonesome Dove, feels especially fitting:

“It’s been quite a party, ain’t it?”
