We Remember

TSAKUMIS, Alex

February 6, 1974 — December 17, 2023

On December 17, 2023, Alex Tsakumis passed away at the age of 49, at Kelowna General Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Vancouver, BC, and is survived by his parents, Nick and Anna Tsakumis, sister Katerina (Rob) Hay, and his beloved nieces Annika and Mikaela, whom he absolutely adored.

Being born to immigrant parents, Alex was very proud of his Greek heritage, which he truly embraced in the 20+ years he lived in Calgary, AB, where he made many Greek friends. Despite not having been to Greece as an adult, he honoured his culture. When visiting family in BC, he would seek out his friends and reconnect with the Greek communities in Kelowna, Prince George, and Vancouver.

Alex was an avid sports fan and a kid at heart. He passionately cheered on “his” teams (the Vancouver Canucks and Seattle Seahawks) in good seasons and bad. The wonder that many people lose in adulthood, Alex sustained. His carefree spirit, his ability to create quick connections and strengthen friendships, and his desire to live life to the fullest without drama were among his greatest characteristics. Above all, Alex was a kind, loyal, and genuine person who went the extra mile for his friends and was always looking out for others. He would give the shirt off his back if someone asked for it, regardless of his own need. His friends describe him as full of cheer, always positive, never complaining about his lot in life, and always laughing. He was there for and fiercely protected the people he loved. Alex will forever be missed by family and friends alike.

  • Deborah Pixley says:

I was neighbours with and went to elementary school with Alex and Kat. A childhood memory that stands out to me is Alex playing (I think baseball) at lunch with his friends and him running over to me and Kat to show us that he’d tore open a bruise on his leg (sliding into home). It was bleeding and filled with rocks and we were mortified but Alex just flashed a huge smile, laughed and went right back out there to continue the game. I also have fond memories of learning Greek dancing and enjoying Greek food with them at the Hellenic Community Centre. We reconnected over Facebook, as adults, and Alex started his messages with ‘Hey Sweetie’ and always ended them by sending love to my whole family. Just a truly kind soul who was all-in and cared deeply..

Sending love and strength to his entire family; he’s physically gone too soon but I hope you find some comfort in sharing good memories. ❤️

It seems trite to state how we are devastated by Alex’s passing–but it’s true. He was an extraordinary human being with a gentle soul and love for all those around him. His was one of the kindest souls ever, and I was blessed by our mutual love and respect. Gone far too soon, the memories we shared as members of this family will last a lifetime for me. To Uncle Nick, Aunt Anna, Katerina and Rob and the girls, stay strong and know he is in a better place where, long from now, may you meet again. My family and parents join me in sending our love and support from Vancouver.

  • Evan & Jimmy Kritikos says:

    Tsakumis Family,
Our heart breaks for the loss of your beloved Alex at such a young age. We met Alex about 20 years ago when he first came to Calgary. I had a lot of good memories talking sports, hanging out over a beer and discussing our mutual love of Greece and Greek culture. Alex was so full of life and positivity that it was infectious. A genuine, hard working, positive and caring guy, a great chef in the kitchen too! All the attributes that have been described about Alex are a testament to his family and the wonderful job you all did in raising him. May God help provide the strength you all need to get through this incredibly tragic time as you mourn the loss of Alex. May his memory be forever eternal. Zoe sa sas. Dearest Thea, Theo, Kathy and family,
We are very sad to hear of Alex’s passing. It is never easy to lose such a light and love and he was full of both of these things. Our memories of our family times together in Kelowna are deeply ingrained; our holidays, our summers on Sarson’s beach, our neighborhood walks while our parents made sausage, and the cherished list goes on. Our love for you all is deep and we feel your pain and sorrow. Our prayers go out to you all and we will keep Alex in our prayers forever. May his memory be eternal.

  • Carrie O'Toole says:

My sincere condolences to Alex’s family. I first met Alex 11 years ago. We worked together at a seniors home in Calgary. We remained close friends through the years. We often got together and went to the movies. He was so much fun to be around. His kindness, humour, and hugs is what I’m going to miss the most. He was truly one in a million. I will miss him dearly. Forever in my heart.
