We Remember

TURNER, Gilbert Edward

August 21, 1940 — June 17, 2026

Gilbert Edward Turner passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 17, 2026, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 85.

Gib was a highly respected man who earned the admiration of all who knew him. His character was marked by honesty, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility. Whether through his work, his friendships, or his service to others, he led by example and left a lasting impression on countless lives.

Gib, born August 21, 1940, was one of two children born to George Turner and Edna Turner (née Mathison). He shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janice Turner (née Jones). Together they built a life centered on love and family, raising their three children in Rossland.

He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather, whose warmth and zest for life touched everyone he met. He was the kind of person people could always count on. Whether offering practical help, encouragement, or his time, he was always there for those who needed him. His creative mind and talent as an inventor led him to build and create remarkable things, but it was his kindness and generosity that people will remember most.

Gib had an accomplished career at Teck (Cominco) from 1961 to retirement in 2005. He was a journeyman instrument mechanic specializing in automatic control systems and later transitioned into mainframe computers.

He embraced life with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. In the winter, he could often be found downhill skiing at his favourite hill, Red Mountain, followed by a cold beer with friends. Summer was filled with activities he loved most, mountain biking, golf, fishing and camping at Evans with family and friends. A supportive father and grandfather, he never missed a sporting event or activity involving his children or grandchildren. His generosity and unwavering presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Rhonda (Nancy), Tera (David), and Greg (Jennifer). He was a proud grandfather to Bria, Halle, Max, Jaxon, Aja, and Jayda, who brought him endless happiness. Gib said the greatest gift was his children. Gib created cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

In his final year, he found companionship and joy with his dear friend June.

“To the world, he was just a man, but to his family, he was the world.”

A donation to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation  in the memory of Gib is welcomed.
