We Remember

VAN BRUNT, Hilbrandina “Brandi”

April 29, 1948 — July 20, 2023

Hilbrandina Van Brunt passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023. Brandi came to Canada as a young child from the Netherlands over 70 years ago. At that time, she went by Hilbrandina “Hilda” Scheper. Over the years she was known by many names and many roles. Some of her most cherished moments were those spent with close family and friends.

Brandi’s passion for her homeland was evident in her home, with lots of Delft Blue décor. She also volunteered at Folklorama in Winnipeg, MB and danced along with her beloved grandchildren. Brandi also loves music that spanned the generations, from Elvis to Venga Boys. Oma (as her grandchildren refer to her) imparted loving memories of impromptu dance parties in the kitchen.

Brandi also loved the outdoors and anything to do with gardening. She shared her love by tending to a community garden and weeding any flower bed she came across. Brandi also instilled a love for gardens and the outdoors in her three daughters and three grandchildren.

Brandi had a colourful wardrobe that matched her passion for life and people. She was often found stopping people and complimenting them on their attire, hair and of course their gardens. She loved to connect with others.

Brandi worked for BC Interior Health, in Manitoba she worked as a housekeeper and laundry staff for many years. She was known for taking the time to talk to residents and make them feel special.

Brandi/Mom/Oma will be dearly missed by her partner (Frank), three daughters Sylvia Penner, Phyllis Demasson (Rob) and Amanda Penner (Derek Pearson) and three grandchildren Lehla, Hailey and Jesse. Fur Babies Spike (cat), Shadow (cat), Tango (grand-dog).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kelowna Hospice House.

Your Mom/Auntie Brandi always greeted me with a smile, a hug and had so much love to share each time I saw her, even if it had been several years between visits. She had so many memories to share with me of the times when Amanda and I were little and shared so many stories of life before we were born.

Dear Family – Brandi will be missed – we had MANY good times together and I think of her often. She taught me many crafty things and we never missed an Elvis concert! Many dances, sleep overs (with Frank and her) meal shared together and in the old days many card games and meals shared. You’ll be forever in our hearts. 😘

  • Joyce Still says:

To all of Hilda’s (Brandy) family and extended family – condolences. I was so sad to hear her passing. She was so full of life and was my favorite auntie growing up and enjoyed her visits back to Manitoba. I remember spending holidays with her on the farm when I was young. It was so much fun. Even gathering eggs with her was fun. She will always be remembered for her warm ability to connect with people and spread happiness through her laughter. May she rest in peace with all of our special ones who have gone before.
