We Remember
VAN DE MOSSELAER, Adrian
—
Surrounded by family, faith and love, Adrian passed away on October 31, 2016 at the age of 81 years, 10 months.
Adrian was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands on December 31, 1934, the third child of Adrian and Lamberdina Van de Mosselaer. After completing trade school in the Netherlands and apprenticing as a carpenter, Adrian’s older twin brothers Harry and Johnny – dissatisfied with their career prospects in the dismal economy of post-war Netherlands – broached the idea of emigrating to Canada. Rather than having the family being split up on different continents, the entire family decided to move to Canada. On May 7, 1952 the family boarded the S.S. Waterman and departed from Rotterdam, landing in Levi, Quebec eight days later, and from there boarding a train for a cross-country journey to Winnipeg. The Van de Mosselaer family made Winnipeg their home for the next several decades, and members of the extended Van de Mosselaer family continue to reside in Winnipeg to this day.
Upon their arrival in Manitoba, the new Canadians took a number of jobs to make ends meet, engaging primarily in farm work, and later moving into the city of Winnipeg where Adrian and his family members continued to work in a variety of jobs. They also created a home which became an important centre for the social life of the Winnipeg Dutch community. Adrian continued his carpentry apprenticeship in Winnipeg until he was hired by the Manitoba Telephone System in February, 1957. He would work for the MTS for nearly 35 years, until his retirement on his 57th birthday on December 31, 1991.
In December 1956, shortly before starting his career with the MTS, Adrian would meet the love of his life Donna through the youth group at their church. They were engaged 18 months later, and were married in June, 1960. In the first four years of their marriage Adrian and Donna had their first three sons, and in 1965 the young family moved to Dauphin, Manitoba, where their fourth son was born, and they would raise their family and live for the next 39 years. Summers were spent enjoying the outdoors camping at any of the many campgrounds in the area, and at the many beaches around Dauphin. Winters were spent tobogganing, playing hockey, and playing cards – an activity which was a lifelong passion for Adrian.
Amongst his many activities and interests, Adrian was very involved in his church, with the Knights of Columbus, and singing with his Barbershop men’s chorus and quartet. Adrian was a man of quiet strength and profound faith who was deeply committed to his family, his friends and his community. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Donna (nee Haywood), and his four sons: Adrian III (wife Deborah), Randal (wife Pam), Darren (wife Rosa) and Chris (wife Brenda). He is also survived by seven adoring grandchildren: Corey (Catherine), Adrian IV, Stefan (Bonnie), Jayme, Lucas, Quinn and Katia. His favorite sister Cathy also survives him, along with sisters-in-law Mardie and Jeanine. He was predeceased by his parents as well as by his brothers Harry and Johnny, his brother-in-law John, and his grandson Matthew.
Prayers will be held at St. Charles Garnier Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016, and mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5 at St. Charles Garnier Catholic Church, with Fr.
