We Remember

VATH, Linda

July 6, 1945 — March 21, 2024

Born on July 6, 1945, in Vulcan, Alberta, Linda Vath peacefully went home to be with her Lord on March 21, 2024, with her husband of 50 years, Merle, by her side.

Linda’s parents both had an unshakeable faith in God, and taught her the importance of a relationship with Him from a very early age. She decided to become a follower of Jesus on her 8th birthday, and spent her life trying to walk in His footsteps.

While growing up on a farm near Ensign, Alberta, Linda and her siblings would sometimes ride bikes, often play outside with the animals and toys, and always help with the interminable array of chores. Once when she and her mother were baking together, there was a wad of white string on the counter. Linda picked it up and offered it to her to eat. Thinking it was a pinch of coconut, her mom opened her mouth, and Linda popped it in. Fortunately for Linda, she and her mother shared a marvellous sense of humour and laughed for a long time about this antic!

When Linda was young, she dreamt of becoming a teacher. After working in the Vulcan Hospital at the age of 16 and then graduating high school, she realized that she had a passion for the medical field. In 1967, she graduated with her crowning educational achievement as a Registered Lab Technologist from Lethbridge Municipal Hospital.

Her love of music was evident quite early, and lasted all of her days. She took piano lessons as a child, and loved to sing for fun, and later in choirs or quartets.

Linda met Merle at a College and Career Halloween party in 1973. They were married the following year at First Baptist Church in Kamloops, BC. Amazingly, she worked until 3pm on their wedding day, returned home to finish sewing her headpiece and veil, and then went to the church to change clothes!

There was no craft or hobby that Linda could not do if she so desired. Other than sewing, she tried her hand at knitting, crochet, paper tole, cross stitch, card making, and cake decorating to name a few. And she loved to bake! Mostly in order to eat the delicious creations.

Linda was ecstatic to become a mom, first to Richard, then a few years later, to Rosalyn. She loved and supported her children fiercely, and helped them to become creative, independent, and adventurous by laughing at their shenanigans, celebrating their successes, and helping them pick up the pieces in failure.

She regularly volunteered her time to a variety of programs at Lake Country Alliance Church. Whether a children’s program needed some extra help, a creative project needed hands, or someone just needed a cup of tea, Linda was a ready participant.

Family was very important to Linda, and meeting the next generations of Vaths gave her great joy! While not many of them lived nearby, she loved to hear updates, see pictures of their growth and adventures, and visit whenever possible. She also cared deeply for a neighbouring family, and was able to share her Grandma-love with them.

Linda is survived by her husband Merle; children, Richard (Deidra) Vath and Rosalyn (Mike) Klassen; Merle’s two sons, Steven Vath and Rob (Treena) Vath; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; stepmother, Lena Thiessen; brothers, David (Lucy) Heide and Jim (Elaine) Heide; sister, Judy (Graham) Miller; as well as extended family and friends.
