We Remember
VINK, John
March 13, 1941 — November 17, 2022
On November 17, 2022, John Vink passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC at the age of 81 years.
John is survived by his life partner Shirley; his son Graham & daughter-in-law Nicole; his sister Judy; and extended family. He was predeceased by Elaine, his wife of 32 years.
Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, John enjoyed his “big city” years, growing up on Oak Street. He regularly spent time with his dad watching trains in the CP rail yard. After moving to the Interior in the early 70s, he met his future wife Elaine while under her nursing care at the Kelowna General Hospital. They built a family home in 1978 the move-in weekend was interrupted by the early arrival of their only child, Graham.
John spent many years working for BC Bearings in Vernon. Despite long days with the drive to and from Kelowna, he was a supportive and willing family man. He was known and loved by many as a familiar face at the Kelowna Alliance Church (now Mission Creek), ushering on the balcony every week for many years. John had an easy-going and approachable way about him, making a broad circle of friends and acquaintances in the community.
After retiring, John worked occasionally for a local hobby shop, and developed interests in drones and RC helicopters, while continuing to build his collection of N-scale model trains. He lived at Sunrise Village for many years before moving into Hawthorne Park.
John enjoyed “making his rounds”, getting to know employees at his regular gas station, convenience store, or drive-thru, and kept things light until the very end. He will be missed by many.
