We Remember

VRIEND, Geertruida

Geertruida (Truus) Vriend, aged 88, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, March 2, 2021, in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. She was born on January 13, 1933 in Avenhorn, Netherlands to Gerrit Haakman and Antje Haakman (Beemsterboer). Geertruida moved to Canada with her husband in 1953, where they welcomed their children into the world. She is predeceased by her husband Johannes Adrianus Vriend.

Geertruida is remembered as being hardworking, kind, and understanding. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was known by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Oma.”

Geertruida is deeply missed by her family and friends in Canada and The Netherlands. Her family would like to thank all the volunteers, staff, and clinicians at Kelowna General Hospital for their support and compassion in her final days.

To respect Geertruida’s wishes, no memorial services will be held. In an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia.

    As a child, Co was allowed to stay with you for a few months from the Netherlands and thought this was wonderful,
    he would have liked to stay there and kept a special place for you in his heart.
    I have very happy and warm memories of our vacations in Canada that we visited you every four years, and I am glad I got to know you and benefit from your hospitality.
    I hope that you can rest in peace and that you will be with uncle Jan again, and I also hope that you may meet Co there again
