We Remember

WAKAL, Helen

On November 21, 2022, Helen Wakal passed away in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 100 years. Left to cherish her memory are her son Alex Wakal; granddaughters Janet and Christine Wakal; and daughter-in-law Dilys Wakal.

Born in Poltava, Ukraine, Helen immigrated to Canada in 1949 with her husband and son Alex, landing in Halifax, NS.  After arriving in Canada, they made their new home in Winnipeg, MB.

Helen was an amazing cook, and showed her love for others by creating delicious meals of perogies, holupchi, borscht, and other family favourites.  She learned to cook as a young girl from her grandmother.  Helen loved to look nice, always having her hair done (styled weekly) and nails manicured.  She enjoyed gardening and flowers, and loved animals, especially her budgie birds which she had over the years.  She moved to Kelowna in 2007 to be closer to family.  Helen always said goodbye with a “Drive smart” or “Drive like an angel” when you left the house, waving from the window.

By request, there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to KGH Foundation.
