WALKER, Nina

November 10, 1930 — May 13, 2025

Nina Jane Walker, RN (née Forward), formerly of Buchans, Newfoundland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in Kelowna, British Columbia, at the age of 94 years.

Predeceased by her parents, Colin Forward and Ida Jane (née French); brothers Eric, William “Bill” (Frances), Colin (Betty) and John “Jack” (Elizabeth); sisters, Mary Osbourne  (James “Jim”) and Elizabeth “Betty” King (Arthur “Art”).

Nina is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Frank Walker, and four sons: John (Lise Noseworthy) of Kelowna, Stephen (Michele) of Winnipeg, Tim (Bonnie) of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, and Philip (Kimberly) of Kelowna. She was a proud grandmother to Amanda, Shannon, Victoria, Matthew, Samatha, and Jessica. A beloved great-grandmother to Finley, Jack, Henry, Mason, and Eleanor.

She is also survived by her brother, Charles Forward of Buchans, Newfoundland, and sisters, Louise Wall (Mike) of Grand Falls-Windsor, Erica Forward of Buchans, and Elaine Ivany (Jack) of North Bay, Ontario.

Nina was born November 10, 1930, in Carbonear, NL, but the family moved to Buchans before Christmas of that same year. She graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and started working at the Buchans Hospital in 1953. She retired from nursing in 1987 as Director of Nursing at the A.M. Guy Memorial Hospital. Nursing and health care were her life and passion. She especially loved newborns and delivered many of the current residents of the town she always called home. She was most happy holding a baby in the nursery of the hospital.

She was a founding member of the Buchans Curling Club, the Lionettes, and the Girl Guides. She loved to cross-country ski and watch her sons play hockey. Other passions included travel,  gardening, reading, knitting, quilting, playing Scrabble, and crosswords. In later life, she outcompeted many of the contestants on Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Ultimately devoted to their family, Nina and Frank followed their sons west and lived close to them and their families in Kelowna, but her heart remained in Newfoundland. They visited home regularly until health challenges and Covid limited their travel.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral and interment in Buchans will follow.
