We Remember

WILSON, Myrtle Evelyn

1925 – 2023

Myrtle Evelyn Wilson (née Hanson) passed away August 11, 2023, after 98 fully-lived years. Myrtle was born in Carbury, North Dakota, of Norwegian immigrant roots. She attended teacher college in Minot, North Dakota, where she taught for two years before moving to Washington state to continue teaching.

While in Washington, she met Milton Wilson, the pastor of her church. They married and began an adventurous life of preaching and teaching across the western U.S. and Canada. Seven children were born along the way. They moved to Lethbridge, AB in 1975 where Myrtle kept busy working part-time at Sears and for an organization advocating for the rights of persons with diverse abilities (her youngest daughter Holly was born with Down syndrome). In 1991, she and Milton made their final home in Kelowna, BC. She enjoyed volunteering at Kelowna General Hospital and was very involved with Pathways Abilities Society. One of her proudest moments was attending the ribbon-cutting in June 2023 for Hadraft-Wilson Place, Pathway’s 68-unit affordable housing development on Bertram Street. The building is partially named after the Wilson family in recognition of their advocacy for the organization. Beyond volunteering, Myrtle was very social, loved good books, and played many card games.

Myrtle was predeceased by her husband; five children: Christine, Paul, Earl, Lewis, and Holly; and a son-in-law, David. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn and son Clark; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honour Myrtle by directing donations to Pathways Abilities Society.

A Funeral Service and reception will be held on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2023, at 10:00 AM, at SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, Pastor Edward Skutshek will be officiating. With interment to follow at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, BC.
