ZIEGLER, Rudolf

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rudolf “Rudy” Ziegler on August 4, 2023, at the age of 85.

Rudy is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel; son David (Connie) of Vancouver, BC, and daughter Caroline (Stephen) of Toronto, ON; beloved grandchildren Zachary and Dylan Ziegler, and Connor and Mira Kranabetter; brother John Ziegler and sister Kathy Sowinski of Kelowna, BC; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Matthew Ziegler.

Rudy was born in Balmas, Romania and emigrated with his family from Germany in 1950 to Kelowna, BC, where his parents bought a fruit orchard. Rudy and Hazel met in 1960 and married in 1962. They bought the orchard and family home in 1968, where they happily raised their family.

Rudy and Hazel sold the orchard and retired in 1996 but remained in their home on an acre of subdivided land. Rudy spent many happy years there with Hazel, puttering in his workshop and around the house, and visiting with friends and relatives. He and Hazel travelled extensively, venturing to such far-flung places as Costa Rica, Fiji, New Zealand, Panama, Mexico, the Rhine River Valley, Hawaii, Alaska, South Korea and throughout Canada and the Western US. In 2019, Rudy and Hazel sold the farmhouse and moved into a retirement community in town.

Rudy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting, boating, and fishing. He loved wood working and built birdhouses and many toys for his grandchildren. He enjoyed being with his family and experiencing different cultures and food during his travels. He was a loving husband, beloved father and grandfather, loyal friend and generous mentor. He will be greatly missed by all.

A Celebration of Life will be held on SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 2023, at 1:00 pm, at SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.
