We Remember

ZWAAGSTRA, Sjouke
March 31, 1928 — May 24, 2017
On May 24th, 2017, Sjouke Zwaagstra passed on to be with his Heavenly Father, and joins Mom (Tine) whom he has longed to be reunited with since her passing over 5 years ago. While saddened by our loss, we are glad to know he is home.
Known as “Chuck” to those unable to pronounce his name, Dad was a long-time resident and fruit grower in Lake Country (Winfield). Like many others at that time, he immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in the 50’s, bride in tow, and made the Okanagan his new home. He loved the Valley for all its beauty, as much as his kids and grandchildren do today. He was a committed father and husband, lived a quiet and disciplined lifestyle rooted in his Christian values. A good listener, always interested in the lives of others over himself, combined with his slowness to judge made him a wise man. His opinions and approval mattered. Much of that character is evident in the family he leaves behind.
Dad/Grandpa was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Tine (nee Lemstra) in 2012, and his son Joe Zwaagstra in 2007. He will be loved and remembered by his children Shirley and Harry (Byl), John and Cynthia, Dave and Sherry, and Laurel (Joe’s wife), along with 16 grandchildren and their spouses, and 5 great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Dad’s aversion to attention, and his preference for simplicity, he will be laid to rest in a private, family graveside service at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

To the Zwaagstra Family:
On behalf of the Walraven families I extend sincere condolences to you and your families. Growing up next to you on Shanks Road has given us lasting memories of days gone by. Our parents had such a great friendship and it truly is the end of an era. Your father Sjouke was a genuine wonderful man and will join the ranks of the angels in Heaven. Thinking of you all and sending our love and hugs!❤️❤️❤️

Beste familie Zwaagstra,
My deepest sympathy to you & your family with the passing of your father. I always enjoyed it when he visited the library. He was always so kind and quiet, and he always left us with a smile and a bit of humor. He was a true model to all of us. I shall miss him.
